Little known fact, this website was built in response to the coronavirus pandemic. I got tired of seeing misinformation and false information spreading on the internet. If you don’t know who I am, check out my about page for more information. In short, I am an athlete and a medical and nutritional science nerd with a passion for nutrition and lifestyle modifications for disease prevention and treatment.
Background
First off, coronavirus, SARS-CoV2 and COVID-19 are slightly different in their meaning, although they are often confused. Coronavirus is a family of viruses that often gets used when discussing specific strains of the SARS virus. SARS-CoV2 refers to the actual virus in this 2020 pandemic and COVID-19 refers to the disease/illness that someone develops AFTER infection.
Originally, I did not plan on posting about SARS-CoV-2 or COVID 19 because I am not an intensivist, a pulmonologist, or a virologist. While I have read most of the articles on the new virus, I personally think we shouldn’t run where we haven’t walked before.
But in light of it all, I could not let charlatans mislead, confuse, or profit off of the fears of the public. If there is one thing I am passionate about, it is Nutrition. And everyone needs to hear this loud & clear:
- NO DIET OR SUPPLEMENT will prevent you from contracting SARS-CoV-2.
- NO DIET OR SUPPLEMENT will render you impervious to the virus.
- NO DIET OR SUPPLEMENT will prevent you from infecting someone else.
- Not vegan, not keto, not paleo, not a juice fast.
There are, however, diet and lifestyle modifications that can improve our bodies ability to fight the infection and reduce any symptoms.
I have seen claims that everything from garlic to elderberry to celery juice will prevent or cure COVID-19. These statements are false & not scientifically proven. Several books published at the start of the pandemic make false claims profiting off of rightfully concerned individuals. I understand how frustrating it is to hear that ‘washing your hands’ & social distancing are the best strategies but they are. Most may not know that there is a big difference between prevention of infection and prevention of the disease.
While we can not prevent the infection, there ways to improve our cardiopulmonary fitness & keep your immune system in tip-top shape, to prevent the disease. Remember, nothing will prevent infection or prevent us from infecting others.
